🌐 What Is AI All About?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the creation of computer systems that can perform tasks traditionally requiring human intelligence – such as learning, reasoning, problem‑solving, and even creativity. Just as we distinguish between natural flowers and artificial ones, AI represents intelligence that exists outside the human brain.

🧠 Origins of AI

The idea of machines that could “think” emerged alongside the rise of digital computers in the 1950s. Computers amazed scientists with their ability to perform complex calculations quickly and accurately, sparking the question: Could a machine be designed to think and learn like a human?

  • 1955: The first AI program was written.
  • 1956: At the historic Dartmouth Conference, the term Artificial Intelligence was officially coined.
  • Early pioneers studied the human brain – drawing inspiration from biology, physics, and psychology – to explore how machines might replicate aspects of human thought.

📈 Growth and Breakthroughs

AI’s journey has been marked by cycles of progress and setbacks, often called “AI booms” and “AI winters.” Despite these fluctuations, the field advanced steadily:

  • Expert systems in the 1980s mimicked human decision‑making.
  • Machine learning in the 1990s–2000s shifted focus to data‑driven approaches.
